Etappe 3 Tholen - Zierikzee

19 July 2011

The weather was a little overcast and of course with the inevitable wind but in spite of the forecast threatening rain, it grew brighter and sunnier as the day progressed. By now we had got to know our fellow tour bikers and ran into "the Jena Team" Harald and Andrea frequently along the way.

The route took us across another dike to the next island but this time, the wind was not so intense and it was a pleasant ride. Once again we passed by the all the typical Dutch characteristics.... windmills, canals, locks and waterlogged fields and meadows complete with a full compliment of sheep and cows.

Just as we were starting to feel a little peckish, we passed a sign advertising coffee and home cooked pastries which we just couldn't refuse..... Tanja had Belgian waffels with hot cherries and whipped cream while Darrell chose apple strudel with vanilla sauce and ice-cream.

A little later, we reached the sandy dunes on the northern coasts and of course, Tanja collected some sand to bring back home with us. Arriving at Zierikzee, we found a market in full fling and after putting up the tandem, we went through it and then on an exploritory walk through the town.

The Hotel room was up 4 flights of stairs, right in the wooden beams and rafters of the roof. The dutch town buildings are narrow and tall (and our rooms always seem to be at the top of them!)
